MEET OUR HEROES

TO PROTECT AND SERVE

Military and police K-9s serve with the same honor and distinction as their human counterparts. They are full-fledged police officers and soldiers. In fact, military K-9s outrank their handlers. Used in law enforcement for more than 100 years and in the U.S. military since the Revolutionary War, today these unsung heroes serve at the local, county, state and federal level and in nearly every branch of the armed forces.

ENFORCING LAWS

From search and rescue and border protection to explosive and narcotics detection, police K-9s work tirelessly—and often in harm’s way—for an average of six to nine years. Their hard work often results in joint damage, cruciate ligament ruptures, drug ingestion, lacerations and other work-related illnesses.

SERVING OUR NATION

Military working dogs do dangerous work, protecting our military bases, conducting critical search and rescue missions and detecting IEDs. They even parachute out of planes to accompany Special Forces on secret missions. Retirement typically comes after seven or eight years of service, and these dogs often suffer from joint pain, combat stress or bone and muscle damage from gunshot wounds or explosives.

UNIQUE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND

K-9s and their handlers develop an unbreakable bond during their service together. In fact, when it’s time for the dogs to retire, 90 percent of military working dogs are adopted by their current or former handlers. As military handlers often say, “Where I go, my dog goes. Where my dog goes, I go.” Zoetis is proud to be there with them, helping to support the care of these valiant animals and providing some relief from the financial burden on their owners.
